Andrea Phillips- Embroiderer-Illustrator-poet-writer. She says: “Often, artists turn to creating gardens through personal adversity, finding sanctuary in nature. Touching the soil and watching the birds and planting vegetables have been a kind of survival for myself, especially in these uncertain times. So it seems inevitable that I would start making little worlds of gardens (tunnel books) in my own artistic practice, as a sort of cathartic healing process.
A sociological interest in why artists, create gardens like the Sculptor, Barbara Hepworth, the Poet, Ian Hamilton Finlay and the Film Director, Derek Jarman, orbits around my practice, and is embedded in my work.”
